Dear Sharyn,
When I was younger I remember my mother would always get a headache when she was angry or upset. Is there a connection?
- R.K. -
Thank you for the question R.K. This has to be one of the most common queries in our culture as people start to realize their emotions are directly tied into their physical wellness. Negative thinking patterns will create negative physical reactions. It is your body’s way of telling you that what you are doing isn’t working. For your mother, the expression of negative emotions, and the negative thoughts created a negative physical response in the way of headaches. Health issues like headaches are often connected to the way we think, express and live so for your mother, it certainly was her body telling her that the negative choices were not working well for her.

Dear Sharyn,
I really hate my job, but I feel stuck because I have to pay the bills. I have been there a long time and I feel I am too old to look for something else. I am miserable – what do I do?
- J.L. -
Thanks for the question J.L. You have many choices, some of them are, stay there, stay miserable and complain to anyone who will listen, chance a change and look for a new work situation, quit and go on disability, or change the environment you are in to make it more pleasant. You sound as if you are from the baby boom era, and possibly close to retirement. You can continue on just the way things are, feeling miserable; or you can take control of your experiences. You arise in the morning, hate getting out of bed because you know the dreaded day ahead is going to be miserable. You anticipate it, thus you make it your reality. My suggestion is this:
When you go to bed at night, offer up gratitude to the Universe for the events and opportunities you had that day. It does not matter what the events were, just be grateful for all of them, positive and negative. Before you arise in the morning, offer gratitude for the wonderful bed you sleep in, the warm roof that protected you while you rested, and the potential the day ahead presents. Offer gratitude for simply awakening and having the opportunity to live another day. As you engage in these behaviors, you will discover things getting better for you. You will more surely notice the wonderful events of the day and slowly your thought patterns will become more of gratitude. This will bring to you events that match your thoughts. Like attracts like – positive thoughts attract positive experiences. Please write back and let me know how this works for you. Good Luck!

Dear Sharyn,
I am developing along a spiritual path, but my husband scoffs at everything I do. He says I am deluded and silly, and often will sabotage good things I have planned. I am learning to resent him a great deal and I do not like the way that feels. Can you help?
- V.R. -
Thank you for the question V.R. It is a great question in these times of spiritual awakening. Not all humans are awakening, and that is challenging for family. The first thing to know is you have no control over anyone else, husband included. You can only take control of your own life and I have an idea that I think will work for you. I will share an exercise with you that was taught to me by a Buddhist Monk. It worked for me, and has worked for several clients I have shared it with; I would love to hear if it works for you.
When you retire at night, visualize your husband in your minds eye. See his face clearly and from your heart send him all the loving thoughts and wishes for success and good things that you can muster. Hold this feeling for a few minutes, then release the exercise with love and enjoy the nights sleep. Continue to do this every evening for seven days. I will look forward to hearing the result for you.
This exercise is a personal and private one, so try not to share it with anyone while you are in the seven days. Just do it and trust. You are already angry so you have nothing to lose by offering up love and kindness. By the way, this works for any negative relationship in your life, not just scoffing husbands.
