About Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the modern name for the “controlled use of plant essential oils (not flower essences) to maintain and promote physical, psychological and spiritual well being.”

The term Aromatherapy is quite modern and was given by A French Chemist named Gattefose in the 1920’s.Aromatherapy has proven therapeutic and health benefits and are often used to compliment holistic and medical treatments to improve health and prevent dis-ease. It is especially effective for stress-related problems and for a variety of chronic conditions. Essential oils relieve pain, inflammation, kill bacteria and are powerful healing agents.

Aromatherapy Treatment involves the use of essential oils which are the life force, intelligence and vibrational energy of aromatic plants, flowers and trees. The essential oils are composed of tiny molecules that can permeate every cell in the human body. They are readily absorbed through the skin and can be used in a variety of ways, including massage, baths, applications, compresses, inhalations, etc.

Aromatherapy has attracted widespread interest and recognition during the past decade and is rapidly growing and welcomed. Aromatherapy is the most widely used complimentary therapy in the UK National Health Service in the General Hospitals, Clinics and Private Practises, being regarded as a balance of both art and proven science.

In 1993 a major breakthrough occurred in the UK when GPs (general practitioners) were empowered to refer patients to complimentary therapists for treatment on the National Health Service, provided that the GP concerned remained clinically accountable for the patient. (Shirley price policy and practice)

IFPA accredited colleges have trained a wide variety of people which include nurses and doctors from all over the world, at various worldwide locations. An aroma therapist commits to the promotion of education and research into the art and science of essential oils, with a holistic and modern approach.

Brief History

Aromatic Plant medicine has been in use for some 6000 years, their usage is surrounded by religion and mysticism. The Egyptians, Indians, Persians, Romans and Greeks used them in times of spiritual enlightenment, love, war and plagues. The most read book in centuries is the holy bible and many references can be found relating to their use.

Some believe that the wall paintings found in the Lascaux (Dordogne) caves on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, indicate the use of medicinal plants by the cave dwellers. These paintings were dated as being painted 18,000 years ago.

An Aromatherapy Session

A comprehensive individual health assessment is completed and appropriate formulas for health related conditions are looked at in order to follow up with a home care treatment plan. The practitioner will ask you information about yourself which will include medical history, stress levels, diet, general lifestyle, exercise routines and any other concerning conditions.

A foot analysis that is similar to reflexology is also incorporated in the first session and a look at the condition of your skin, eyes and nails. (As these areas can also offer an insight into your current health condition). Some personal questions may be asked and the more truthful and open you are the easier it will be for the therapist to determine what Aromatic treatment should be given.

The aroma therapist will carefully select essential oils and carrier oils (cold pressed oil) to prepare a customized aromatic healing blend, for your state of mind, physical being, emotional state and spiritual enhancement. This powerful vibrant remedy will treat the whole of your being. Depending on what is being reviewed will determine the form of oil application, therapeutic application could be in the form of full or partial massage, Some therapists may use lymph drainage or relaxation massage as part of the application. Inhalation, compress, aromatic bath or a skin preparation may be a form of treatment for your condition also.

After the initial hour and half session, home care and lifestyle advice is offered and other possible therapies that could promote and enhance your optimal health and wellness.

Note: Trained Aroma therapists should only practice this form of treatment.
