Pipestone Creek We’re Here to Alleviate the Pain.... Pipestone Creek Pain & Health Centre is here to alleviate the pain of what ails you. Whether you’ve suffered from or are afflicted by: The power of massage continues to amaze Pipestone Creek manager Brenda Hewko. “The surprise is just how wide ranging the benefits are with this type of treatment,” she said. Hewko’s own story of recovery reaffirms that observation. “A few years ago, I had a hip injury. The doctors sent me for MRI and X-ray, which returned Normal, No Findings result. Not knowing what else to do, they prescribed rest along with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). After several months, it just wasn’t working, it was getting worse.” So Hewko opted for something different – yoga, chiropractic and massage therapy. “And now, my hip is 98 percent healed. Using the different therapies, typically two at a time, for example 60 minutes massage followed by a chiropractic treatment; is finally how my hip began to mend.” She cites her improved running ability as testimony to these different modalities and their capacity to heal. “In February 2006, my pace for the ½ marathon (21.2 km) was 7:25 minute per kilometre and then a few months later in September, it was at 5:44 pace. That was my Personal Best race.” And Hewko’s is not the only story. A person came in with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. After a series of massage treatments he had improved to the point where the surgery was cancelled. A client suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) was on anti-depressants every winter. After receiving bi-weekly massage treatments, she was able to get through the typical SAD season no longer needing to take prescription drugs. One client dealing with fibromyalgia, made a commitment to herself to come in weekly for treatment and now her health has improved so much, she can manage her condition through exercise. Part of the role of our therapists is to be educators, as they gladly share with clients’ techniques that they can do at home. “They show clients how to utilize pressure points and treat themselves; for example, tennis elbow.” Hewko said. Clients are encouraged to take an active role in their treatment. The talented group of therapists has over 25 years of combined experience and includes Kirstin, Danielle, Deanna, Kirstin and Sonia. Our clinic is well known in the community and includes the services of a chiropractor, Dr. Dave, who has over 27 years of experience. In addition, Dr. Dave is a great resource for the massage therapists and their clients, since he is readily available to answer and discuss any situation. The clinic is located in a wonderful bedroom community just 30 minutes south of Edmonton; the rural setting of Wetaskiwin. The great bonus with a small, rural setting is friendliness of our staff. There is a true caring spirit. Clients also receive excellent value for their money in two ways, time and price. A person books a 60 minutes appointment and they are on the table for an hour. “We set aside an additional 15 minutes after every massage to prepare the room for the next treatment. Most other massage clinics book the next appointment, as soon as the first appointment ends.” As for price, a 60-minute massage can cost an additional $20 to $75 in Edmonton, Leduc, Camrose and other communities. The old adage “Cars costs less in Wetaskiwin”, and so does massage. Afterwards, clients feel completely rejuvenated. “They feel terrific leaving. It’s wonderful having your body loosened up like that. There’s an immediate change from when you walk in – to when you leave.” Hewko can’t stress enough the importance of coming in early when a problem arises. “The sooner they get in, the quicker and better the recovery.” This is one of the many benefits that are very similar between chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy treatments. Problems can arise from everyday living activities like playing sports, working at desk, carrying a backpack or briefcase, driving to Edmonton or Red Deer or other places, bending at the waist or any other repetitive motion. We encourage new clients, of any age at Pipestone Creek. We have an entire family who come in regularly for massage. It is great to teach our children how to look after their bodies, just like we teach their parents. While the services of Pipestone Creek are not covered by Alberta Health Care, most Employer Benefits Plans do have coverage. “Our reception staff members are excellent at understanding and helping fill out the forms.” Hewko said. Pipestone Creek Pain & Health Centre is open weekdays plus Saturday and some evenings for massage. Call 780- 352-0200 to book an appointment.
