The Elevator Dream - Sent in by Darryl from Calgary, AB
Dear Irene,
Can you please help me with interpreting this dream?
I was at a seminar at a hotel. I was rushing down the hall to catch an elevator to go down to the meeting room, but I just missed it, as the door was closing as I walked up.
There were a group of people inside that did not really make an effort to hold the door. I pushed the “up” and “down” buttons to get a 2nd elevator as quickly as possible. The door to the service elevator opened. It was small and cramped. I entered, and there were 2 men inside. 1 wearing only his bath towel, like he had just left the shower. The other looked like a Foreign exchange student. The man in the towel got off a couple of floors below.
The service elevator went outside of the building– a high rise with a lot of 1 way glass- on tracks (e.g. train tracks) like a roller coaster, curving along the outside of the building. (I love roller coasters, so there was no fear, just the initial feeling of weightlessness at the top).The view was awesome – snow capped mountains in the background and overlooking the city! The elevator stopped outside of a large warehouse type setting and the student got off. He made a big deal of saying goodbye to the point where it was uncomfortable…then he touched my arm, essentially making a pass at me! I hurried out of there! The End.

This dream is rich with messages about your current life situation. The important thing to look at when doing dream interpretations is the symbols, metaphors and emotions. Because your dreams are uniquely yours every symbolic meaning is simply what it means to you. I can only give you my personal interpretation (below) but ultimately it has to resonate with you and fit into your beliefs and life.
Here is the list I am highlighting from your dream.
“seminar”
Seminars are places of knowledge that we especially look for business and personal growth. We sometimes attend seminars to be with others of like mind and who are on a similar path. The dream indicates this is what you maybe looking for currently in your life.
“rushing”
A sense of urgency, “missing the boat,” and that “time is of the essence” for something happening or not happening in your life. A good metaphor here could be a caution that “haste makes waste.” Being the “rush” was to enter an elevator (an object of restriction in movement) this could be an action or movement that appears in your waking life to watch out for.
“I just missed it”
We often experience moments of “missing things” in life and this is when we must trust our personal journey. The universe always gives us signs and when a door closes another one will open.
“did not really make an effort to hold the door”
There was an expectation on your part, which shows an action that often happens in life when we assume something from others and how necessary it is for us not to expect others to do things and that we need to make our own way.
“I pushed the up and down buttons to get a 2nd elevator as quickly as possible”
A second option is presented and perhaps there is some confusion and frustration by pushing both buttons as to what direction to go as well as a great sense of urgency.
A good metaphor here might be: Is someone pushing your “buttons or them yours”?
Relating this to your waking life might be as simple as you are in a rush to get somewhere and for you to consider more than one option. Going up in an elevator usually indicates moving in the right direction and down the opposite so you should be considering your options carefully. Also these options could be very restricting to you as elevators are very limited. Down can also mean you are digging deep into roots or rooted thoughts trying to understand your motivation and feelings. Consider this action is a sign of doing some deep thinking on some issues in your life.
“The door to the service elevator opened. It was small and cramped.”
Oh, I love this part… doors open to all aspects of “how may I serve or be served in this life?” What services are you expecting life to bring is one thing to look at.
Being cramped is very limiting in movement and may not “serve” your purpose nor be where you are suppose to go. Know and honor your own journey and the right doors will open for you and for others. Are you feeling hemmed in right now?
“2 men inside”
We may make an assumption that these men are guides and that is very possible. It is important to note that guides offer us choices and options and when they do it is always with love and for our ultimate good. Let’s see if these two men stand up to the qualities of being guides with their actions.
“bath towel man and that he got off a few floors below”,
As all aspects of the dream are part of the dreamer’s psyche, the people in the dream are aspects of us. A man wearing just a towel may be a part of you that feels exposed and vulnerable A towel can bring a sense of warmth and protection after a “cleansing”. Note: The elevator is going down so you are likely digging into some aspects of your life and feeling exposed while doing so. A little digging might show some results quickly as “he got off the elevator fast” and this frees “you/him” from mobility restrictions and puts you back on your course. I do not take this man to be a guide as much as I do a message.
‘Foreign Exchange Student ’
Now this man I would take as a guide. Why?
Because:
1. He stayed with you on “life’s ride” which is like a roller coaster and perhaps to show you that you were on track.
2. He gave some support when elements took you into new surroundings” outside of the building.”
3. The “view was awesome” here you were given a chance to see the big picture, new perspectives and new horizons and to be inspired. He gave you hope and took you to the top!
4. “stopped outside of a large warehouse” – This is his “stop” and by stepping out he is telling you where you can always find him. He is part of your resource (a vast resource of stored information/warehouse) and to find him you just have to tap into your storage of knowledge and ask for him to guide you.
5. He made a big deal of saying good-bye to get you to recognize him in some way.
6. He touched you to make you know he wants to make a personal connection to you and that he really cares about you. This may make us feel uncomfortable because we often don’t expect to make a connection to our guides in such a personal and intimate way.
