Healing After A Loved One Has Died
By Carol J. Uchytil
Death is a very difficult process for most of us to accept even though mini-deaths occur in our lives everyday. Examples include the ending (death) of each day with the beautiful dawn (re-birth) of the next day, plants dying in the Winter for buds to be re-born in the Spring (re-birth) , the ending (death) of one job to begin (re-birth) a new job, ending (death) of one relationship and starting (re-birth) another. And the list goes on... We as humans experience death uncountable times in our lives but when it comes to losing a loved one through the death process most of us are certainly unprepared for the emotional upheavals we may experience.
Normally since we do not experience this type of seemingly permanent death on a regular basis, the ordeal can be emotionally overwhelming! It can be a turbulent process to recovery after you have lost someone you dearly love, be it your father, mother, sister, brother, friend or family pet. Love is love and loss is loss and you cannot control what your heart feels. Losing a loved one can take us from disbelief, fear, shock, anger, depression and at some point hopefully acceptance and healing.
Losing a loved one is difficult because we become so attached to the physical aspects of life. We find comfort, re-assurance and peace in the ability to connect with others physically by talking to them, hearing them, seeing them or touching them. When someone dies we lose the physical connections and attachments we once had and normally our first concern is whether they are OK.
I believe they are OK and at peace. We are the ones who may suffer and not be at peace due to our loss of this physical attachment with our loved one. Numerous religions in the World embrace and believe in re-incarnation, the afterlife as well as God, Higher Power, Buddha, Great Spirit etc. When it comes to the afterlife, the belief that the soul survives death can be rationalized by science. Newton states "That energy can neither be created nor destroyed...only transformed". Since we are all energy it would appear that the soul survives death and lives for eternity!
My hope and intent for this column is that Kim can bring some reassurance to you that your loved ones are at peace, well and OK in spirit. That life goes on and death is not to be feared but is a peaceful transition that we all will experience at some point in our time and our soul will remain for eternity!
